Substrate for dipeptidyl aminopeptidase I (cathepsin C). A broad-spectrum efflux pump inhibitor in gram-negative bacteria. PAbN has been evaluated as an adjunct to antibiotics, as efflux in bacteria mediates antibiotic resistance. Vecchione et al. demonstrated that Phe-Arg-β-naphthylamide could potentiate drug activity also against a gram-positive bacterium. PAbN permeabilizes the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria (Lamers et al.).
